National Donut Day is ‘fried-day’ June 7th let’s celebrate with something new

National Donut Day is ‘Fried-Day June 7th. It comes right before ‘National Hey My thighs Are Too Big for my Pants Day.’

Among the holidays we observe, National Donut Day is a favorite. But when you combine 2 comfort foods like donuts and bacon with a fried egg (Not a comfort food) you either create a new taste sensation or make people barf (Think bacon ice cream).

Dunkin Donuts is rolling out a permanent menu item called the ‘Doughnut Bacon Sandwich’ and in these days of ‘deep fried everything’ this was a no brainer.

“The Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich came about because when you combine these things you sell twice as much product” says marketing guru Kim Buchanan.

As it’s described in their PR, ‘Mounds of fried eggs and slices of lightly salted, cherry-wood-smoked bacon gathered into the sweet, sweet embrace of a “light and fluffy” split glazed doughnut.’ Sounds like a Valentine’s Day card to your sweetheart.

product innovation head Stu Hophausen, “We were sitting around waiting for the donuts to come out of the big donut machine when Bob, eyes glazed and just back from lunch, says “What about putting bacon on a sugary donut? We looked at each other and our eyes began to tear up. We knew it was the next step.’

“We had to train our crew members on constructing the sandwich – slicing the donut, adding the fried egg and bacon. First we told them to slice the donut, which none of them had ever done especially when they’re fresh. What a mess! There was a learning curve on that one. Then, we said, place the eggs and bacon inside. The looks on some of their faces was precious.

Is there a down side to this dish? Just don’t dunk it in your coffee, it gets messy!

“We’ve got another good one in the ‘pipeline’ and we’re calling it the ‘Chocolate Sausage Dunker®. You’ve got your ‘sweet’ and you’ve got your hand held thing. Great for that morning commute.”
