Attention South Florida Drivers……never mind

Drivers in south Florida need to be on the alert for overhead roadway signage telling them to not text and drive. In effect, the signs are diverting your attention to tell you not to divert your attention as you divert your attention from reading the bumper sticker in front of you about whose child made the honor roll.

And about distractions, FDOT doubled the amount of new ‘delineating poles’ on I-95, the formerly free Interstate. They were spending $1 million a year replacing damaged and missing plastic poles and doubled the number of poles. It means they may now spend twice as much because that will not stop you. You see twice the challenge not twice the poles. That’s who you are, be proud.

You’ve helped keep south Florida in the top ten for road rage, careless driving, uninsured drivers and, good news we dropped out of the top ten to number 18 for drunk driving. Either you’re getting good at hiding it or we’re taking the new marijuana initiative to heart.

We’re ‘running late’ most of the time and as long as we’re in front of the driver in front of us, it helps with the confusion. It could be the roads themselves. They’ve got too many names.

We’re doing the best we can

The 836 is also known as the East/West Expressway, Dolphin Expressway, the Turnpike Extension, I-395, the Generalissimo Hernando ‘Baby’ Rodriguez overpass, the Mayor William ‘Buster’ Johnson Freeway, the Dan Marino Pass through or the Gloria and Emilio Estefan Singing Flyover. There are more names than there are dead voters in Miami-Dade County.

The 826 is also known as the “Palmetto’, the only roadway in America named after a cockroach, and just as big a pest.

The new configurations around the airport will handle more traffic and give drivers an unprecedented view of the runway at MIA. This may cause slowdowns as drivers take  quick pictures of planes, but as they get used to handling their cell phone cameras ‘on the fly’ we think the flow will get back to normal which should be about 12 mph.

The 836/826 construction project is a joint venture between the Florida D.O.T. and the children’s board game ‘Chutes and Ladders’.
