Allan Aunapu, skipper of Pete Seeger’s sloop Clearwater ‘On the Record and Off the Wall’

Captain Allan Aunapu, an environmental activist and the first rigger and Captain of the famous sloop Clearwater will appear Monday 10AM ‘On the Record and Off the Wall, a http://www.joltradio.org interview show with Buzz Fleischman.

Championed by folksinger and activist Pete Seeger, the Clearwater sailed the Hudson River and held concerts to promote cleaning up the polluted river. Allan will share his memories of that time on the river with Pete and other musicians as they sang, sailed and kick-started an environmental movement to clean up the now unpolluted Hudson River.

The sloop Clearwater is recognized as America’s Environmental Flagship and is among the first vessels in the United States to conduct science-based environmental education aboard a sailing ship, creating the template for environmental education programs around the world. More than half a million people have experienced their first real look at the Hudson River estuary’s ecosystem aboard Clearwater. In 2004, the sloop Clearwater was named to the National Register of Historic Places for its groundbreaking role in the environmental movement. Coming up on Dec. 2nd Buzz welcomes Lee Fisher, ret. NYPD. Lee served in some of the most dangerous areas of the Big Apple as a street patrolman.

He also served with the narcotics unit, Special Victim’s Unit (SVU) and worked at ground zero after 9/11/2001. He tells of his service with his comrades in law enforcement and all the other protective agencies in Manhattan after the fall of the twin towers at ground zero. Lee worked as a paramedic in New York and went on to the New York Police Academy, graduated in 1993 and distinguished himself through his career with the NYPD.

We’ll go behind the scenes with this person who personifies the character and unceasing call to public service throughout his life as he continues to serve the community in many ways.
