An Enigmatic film for our times
‘On the Record and Off the wall’ a joltradio interview show with Buzz Fleischman welcomes film-maker Douglas Burke. Doug has studied Method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute with Hedi Sontag since 1989. He has been involved in experimental theater and film his whole life, as an actor, writer and director. “Surfer” is Burke’s first work available to the public. He lives in Newport Beach, California with his son, Sage, also in the film. Douglas Burke has studied physics his whole life and is a professor at USC in the Physics and EE departments where he lectures. His interest in the mechanism of how spiritual energy interacts with the physical matter in living things led him to the study of Martial Arts and acting. We’ll discover why this film took 11 years to produce and the background on its Carol Connors song ‘Go It Alone’.
This is a film that has some audiences rolling in the aisles, while others find themselves genuinely impacted by the surreal film’s narrative and inherent mystical and spiritual discourses. A uniquely profound examination of faith or a staggering and audacious journey through one man’s layered perspective of man’s relationship to nature and the so-called fears we construct to limit us from achieving our full potential, or: A ludicrous work of unhinged auteur cinema at its most baffling and laughable? Both? Neither? All of the above?
