Monday Dec.7th 10AM On the Record and Off the Wall, a http://www.joltradio.org interview show with Buzz Fleischman, welcomes David Cohen, who has been involved behind the scenes with South Florida’s folk music for many years.
The folk music scene in South Florida has lost many of its iconic venues but enjoys a history of adding richness and substance through so many artists over the years. Dion, Fred Neil, Joni Mitchell, Vince Martin, Bob Ingram, Kevin Hurley and more set the stage for today’s singer/songwriters like Michael Weiskopf, Graham Wood Drout, Rod MacDonald, Steve Bass, Burt Bruton, Amy Carol Webb, Diane Ward, Sarah Jacob, Darrell Arnold and more.
David Cohen has had a front row seat for much of our folk music history as audio technician and producer of open mics. We’ll talk about south Florida’s folk scene and the venues and players with which he has worked. The Coconut grove acoustic musical scene employed a number of stages including Bubbas in the Grove and Monte’s Conch. Other outlets include Luna Star Cafe, Main Street Cafe and of course, Michael Stock’s show since 1981 ‘Folk and Acoustic Music’ Sundays on WLRN radio so there’s history here.
The Flick coffeehouse near the U of M campus spawned many top flight acts and David was there recording them.
